The Common Man Restaurant

After a visit to Mitch’s Maples in Chester, Vermont, we drove to Claremont, New Hampshire. Once we arrived, we ate supper at the Common Man Restaurant, On our trip to Golden Pond we had eaten at the Common Man Restaurant in Ashland, New Hampshire, which we enjoyed.  The Claremont location is great with a view of the Sugar River behind the restaurant, I wish it had been warm enough for us to have sat outside.

The Common Man Restaurant starts you off with hot breads and soft butter. They also have a serve your self cheese bar.

I of course tried about three different cheese that the Common Man Restaurant was offering. Our grandson was not adventurous. He wanted only the hard cheese.

For her meal my wife had the steak tip salad.

I had the smokehouse burger. It was different from any that i can recall having. It had a red onion jam and a smoky aioli. This was along with cheese and bacon.

Our grandson again chose to have chicken and fries.

If you are wondering if the Common Man Restaurant was good, I think this answers the question.

Before you leave, take time to walk around Claremont. The Common Man Restaurant has a hotel next to the restaurant which was once an old mill and the views of the river and falls are nice.

Mitch’s Maples

Upon leaving the Niagara Falls area, we drove to Chester, Vermont and a place we had been to before, Mitch’s Maples. We wanted our grandson to see how maple syrup is made. Having visited Mitch’s Maples once before , we had enjoyed talking to Mitch and learning about the process he goes through working at a sugar house,

We started by walking into the woods to see the maple trees. Seeing how they are tapped was interesting.  You can see the tubes that collect the sugar on the trees. This tubing then goes to the sugar house where it is cooked and reduced down. I think it takes about fifty gallons of the raw product to make one gallon of syrup.

We didn’t get the tour that we had gotten in the past.  Mitch was cooking the syrup and putting it in bottles. We did however get to see the operation and we got to see how he bottled the syrup.

Before leaving Mitch’s Maples, we did buy some syrup to bring home with us and we found that Mitch had some candy made from maple syrup. Mitch’s is a nice stop for anyone to see the maple syrup process.
